Illumination choices: Pool lights with and without diffusers

WIDE vs. STANDARD beam angles

with Astel Lighting METEOR pool lights

When it comes to lighting up a pool, the choices seem endless. Among the considerations is whether to opt for pool lights with or without diffusers. Let’s compare and make this decision easier.

POOL LIGHTS WITHOUT DIFFUSER – Standard beam angle

Direct Illumination

Pool lights without diffusers offer direct illumination, meaning they emit light directly without any scattering or diffusion. This can result in a more intense and focused beam of light.

Sharper Shadows

The absence of a diffuser means that shadows cast by objects in the pool will be sharper and more defined.

Aesthetics

Dramatic effect of direct lighting with sharp shadows creates a dynamic atmosphere which elevates your pool to a superior level.

POOL LIGHTS WITH DIFFUSER – Wide beam angle

Diffused illumination

Pool lights equipped with diffusers scatter the light, creating a softer and more diffused illumination. This can help to evenly illuminate the entire pool area, reducing harsh shadows and creating a more inviting ambiance.

Softened light

The diffusion provided by a diffuser helps to soften the illumination, making it more comfortable for swimmers and bystanders. This can ensure intimacy and overall enjoyment of the pool environment, especially in spas.

Aesthetics

The softer, more diffused light provided by a diffuser can create a more tranquil and inviting atmosphere. This can be particularly desirable for evening gatherings or relaxation.

CONSIDERATIONS

Intended Use

Think about what would be the main use of the pool. Diffused lighting suits recreational settings, while direct lighting may be better for activities requiring visibility.

Aesthetic Preferences

Choose based on personal taste and desired atmosphere.

Efficiency

Diffused lighting may be more efficient due to its even spread. This means that uniform distribution of light can be reached with less quantity of pool lights.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your preferences, intended use, and aesthetic goals, with both options offering unique advantages for illuminating your pool.

ARCHITECTS SAY

“At first sight I would recommend diffused lighting for pools to create more inviting and harmonious environment. The softer, more even illumination provided by diffusers can complement the architectural features of the pool area and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.

On the other hand for activities like water sports where visibility is key, direct lighting without a diffuser may be more suitable. Furthermore, the dramatic effect of direct lighting with sharp shadows, emphasizing the shape of the pool or creating a game of light beams can also be interesting.

To conclude, I would say that the choice depends on the specific design goals and preferences of the client. Each one offers its own unique ambiance and benefits for the pool area.”
